7 Activities for Seniors to Have a Safe and Active Summer
Growing older is all a part of life, but we all have to make the most of our time. If you’ve made your fair share of trips around the sun, or you’ve got an elderly relative you’re looking after, you may wonder how to make the most of summer for seniors.
Fortunately, there are many great ways for seniors to enjoy this season in a safe and fun way!
1. Go fishing
If mobility is no issue, fishing is a fun and relaxing activity. Grandchildren can come along too, or keep it among adults. It’s best to go early in the morning or in the evenings in summer since the temperatures will be easier to tolerate.
2. Have a picnic
Gather family and friends together at your favorite local park and enjoy a nutritious meal outdoors. Everyone can bring a dish plus you can plan fun games for everyone. Even flying a kite would be a lovely activity. Just make sure the picnic spot you choose has plenty of shade.
3. Start a garden
Gardening is a great activity for seniors in the summer. For those that have limited mobility, choosing plant stands or flower beds that are raised will make it easier to reach and reap the benefits of growing vegetables and plants.
4. Go to a museum
With many free options or senior discounts, museums offer a way to stay cool and explore in the summer. From art to history and everything in between, it’s a wonderful activity that you can do with young and old friends alike!
5. Sign up for a class
Check your local senior center or community college and see what summer classes they offer. Learning is great for keeping the mind healthy, plus making new friends can improve the quality of your life. They offer all kinds of classes from water aerobics to cooking sessions so sign up for the things that interest you.
6. Check out the birds
Watching birds is a peaceful activity that seniors can easily enjoy. Head to the park or a wildlife refuge and see how many local birds you can spot flitting about!
7. Head the theater
The theater is a wonderful place to take in music and arts. Plus, it’s air-conditioned too. With outdoor venues, they tend to hold music and theater productions in the evening when it’s cooler, making it another option for seniors to enjoy.
