How to Keep Cool in Summer with Naturopathy
Rising temperatures mean it’s time for summer fun. But without some balance, we can easily undo healthy habits in the intense heat. Incorporating principles of naturopathy into your summer days can help you feel more comfortable and cool no matter how hot it gets.
– Avoid foods that heat you up
Sorry, but now is not the time to indulge in spicy fare. Even certain dairy items like cheese and yogurt should be avoided. Salty foods should also be avoided but for different reasons. Since salt can dehydrate you, you’ll want to limit your intake.
– Go for cooling foods
Not all dairy is off the table. Milk and butter are cooling foods that you can enjoy for a harmonious summer. Additionally, you’ll want to indulge as you wish in ripe and sweet fruits. Mangoes, plums, peaches, pineapples, avocados, and cherries will all help you rise above the heat.
Season your dishes with mint and cilantro, two cooling herbs that have plenty of flavor. Your leafy green vegetables are a nice match for nutrition that counters the effects of the unforgiving heat outside.
– Keep away from ice
Most people think of cooling down with a cold drink, especially one with ice. However, shocking your digestive system with sudden cold will destroy the fire balance. Cold beverages squelch the flames so hydrate with beverages that are room temperature instead. They will assimilate faster and get your hydration back on track.
– Time your meals right
Along with that digestive flame, eating at the right times will help you digest the best parts of those foods. Don’t skip meals or you’ll upset this balance.
– Keep moving
Even though it’s hot out, you can’t give up on your workouts. Instead, switch your exercise time to early morning when nature is at its coolest. Or go for the early evening. These times will be cooler and easier for you to engage in fitness. Simply walking or doing yoga will help though swimming is an excellent activity for summer.
– Engage your mind
It’s not enough to physically cool your body. You should cool your mind too with the powers of meditation. Engage in a way that makes you feel most comfortable and let your mind relieve itself of the tangles within.
